Grapperia
There are certain locales which, without assuming any particular function, claim their own rightful niche in history. This is the case of the grappera of Nardini on the Bassano’s covered bridge that since 1779 has held a leading role in the history that changed the destiny of Europe. Just think: the grapperia was born in the shade of the Most Serene Republic, but great changes were soon to come involving the Nardini grapperia more than any other place in Bassano. They began in 1797 with the French who drained the big copper containers filled with grappa; then the Austrians, when Napoleon traded Veneto in exchange for Lombardy; again with the French until the defeat at Waterloo, and finally for over a half century with the Austrians until in 1866, the annexation to the newly-formed Republic of Italy. Yet through all this, the grapperia has remained the same through time, and claims the distinction in the association of Historic Places of Italy.
